An honest answer to which one fits which job, and the sources we checked. ## When an alternative is the better choice - **WizTree.** On a large NTFS drive it is very hard to beat for speed — it reads the Master File Table directly and says it scans 46 times faster than WinDirStat. It is free for personal use and also runs on macOS. - **TreeSize Professional.** If your storage lives in SharePoint, Google Drive, S3 or Azure, it scans those directly, and it is an established tool in Windows IT departments. - **WinDirStat.** Free and open source, with a treemap that shows a whole drive at once — if you think in rectangles, it is the classic. ## When Space Wizard is the better choice - Your disk problem is on a Linux server or a web host reached over SFTP, FTPS or plain FTP — Space Wizard measures it and finds its duplicates without installing anything there. - You would rather pay once: Pro is €20, not a yearly subscription. - You want a scan that leaves OneDrive and Dropbox placeholders alone, so measuring a disk never downloads gigabytes of online-only files. - You care how saved server logins are kept: host keys are pinned on first connect, and passwords are encrypted with the operating system's keystore or not saved at all. ## Sources - WizTree: [diskanalyzer.com/](https://diskanalyzer.com/) (checked 5 October 2026) - TreeSize: [www.jam-software.com/treesize/editions.shtml](https://www.jam-software.com/treesize/editions.shtml) (checked 5 October 2026) - WinDirStat: [windirstat.net/](https://windirstat.net/) (checked 5 October 2026) Product names are the trademarks of their owners and are used only to identify the products compared.
