# IT support companies

Clients' disks checked from your own desk, nothing installed on theirs.

What the work needs

An engineer looking after other people's servers needs a client's disks checked over from their own desk and a tidy-up plan handed back, without installing anything on the client's machines.

- Hosting & managed services

Customer VMs fill up in the same predictable ways — old backups, rotated logs that never rotated out, build caches — and every investigation starts from scratch on a machine you've never looked at before.
- Sysadmins & DevOps

The alert fires, you SSH in, and you're piping du through sort trying to remember the flags, one directory at a time, over a link that makes every round trip hurt.
- Backup sprawl

Manual backups taken at different times duplicate the same files repeatedly, especially when whole folders get re-copied instead of just the changes. Three generations of backup, one live share, and no idea what the overlap is.

How the software does it

- [Space Wizard](https://royalsoftworks.com/products/space-wizard/)

  ## Forty boxes, one recurring disk problem.

Keep every host as a saved connection and reach for the same view each time. The parallelism is per-host, so a fast local VM and a slow remote one each get a sensible number of connections.

  - SFTP, FTPS or FTP — including hosts with no shell and no SFTP subsystem
  - 1–16 parallel connections, tuned per host
  - Host-key verification refuses a server that changed identity
  - Works on accounts that are locked down to their home directory

  ## "/ is at 96%" — and it's 2am.

Connect once over SFTP and the whole filesystem comes back in a single \`find\` pass, rendered as a chart you can drill into. The offending folder is the biggest bar on screen, and you can clear the duplicate tarballs from the same window.

  - One command streams the whole tree — not a round trip per directory
  - \`df\` mounts listed up front, so you scan the filesystem that's actually full
  - Duplicate hashing runs on the server; only hashes come back
  - Saved connections with keys, agent auth, and a start folder per host
- [DuplicateDuster](https://royalsoftworks.com/products/duplicate-duster/)

  ## When 'better safe than sorry' becomes three full copies.

Point the source at the live share and the target at the old backup generations. The reclaimable total tells you exactly what the overlap costs before you touch anything — and the free tier gives you that number without a licence.

  - Read-only scan; nothing changes until you confirm
  - Full reclaimable-space report is free and uncapped
  - Empty backup folders left behind by a cleanup are pruned automatically

Why it stays on your own computers

A client's server is the client's. Nothing should be left behind on it, and its contents should not travel to a third party.

Built for it: Space Wizard, DuplicateDuster. These are the jobs the software is made for, not customer stories.
