# Space Wizard 1.0: See Where Your Disk Went — Here or on a Server

space-wizard changelog release-notes

**TL;DR —**Space Wizard 1.0 is the first public release, for Windows 10 and 11 as an installer or a portable .exe. It measures a drive folder by folder, shows the largest consumers as a chart, finds duplicate files by content, and does the same against a server over SFTP, FTPS or plain FTP with nothing installed on the server. Free on your home drive up to 100 GB a scan; Pro is €20 once and unlocks every drive with no cap.

Space Wizard answers the question everyone asks when a disk fills up — _where did it go?_ — and then helps you get some of it back. 1.0 is its first public release, on the [download page](https://royalsoftworks.com/download/#space-wizard) for Windows as an installer or a portable `.exe`.

## Folder by folder, until you find it

Point it at a drive and it measures everything: a sortable tree showing each folder's size and its share of its parent, and a chart of the largest things in the folder you are standing in. Open a folder and the chart follows you down. It is a level-by-level breakdown rather than a wall of nested rectangles, because "which of these five folders is the problem" is the question you actually have.

It also counts what most scanners lose. Files Windows holds open — `pagefile.sys` and its relatives — are sized from the directory entry instead of being skipped, which is often the difference between the total on screen and the total Windows reports. It asks for administrator rights at launch, and any folder it still could not read is counted and named in a banner, rather than quietly leaving the total short.

## The same view of a server

The part we use most ourselves: the same tree, chart and duplicate search against a server, over **SFTP, FTPS or plain FTP**, with no agent to install on the other end. Save a connection with a password, a private key or your SSH agent, and the server behaves like another drive.

Two things it is strict about. An SSH server's key is remembered the first time you connect, and if it ever changes the connection stops — it does not just warn and carry on. And saved passwords are encrypted with Windows' own keystore; where the system cannot encrypt them, the app will not save them at all.

## Duplicates, without the risk

Files are matched by their contents, not their names: a size check first, then a hash of whatever survives, so a renamed copy is still caught and a near-miss costs almost nothing to rule out. Deleting is always an explicit selection, local deletes go to the Recycle Bin, and a duplicate group can never be emptied of its last copy. On a server there is no recycle bin, so a delete there is permanent — and the button says so before you press it.

If finding duplicates is the main job rather than a side effect, that is what [DuplicateDuster](https://royalsoftworks.com/products/duplicate-duster/) is for.

## Also in 1.0

- A **guided tour** on first launch that points at the real controls; replay it from Settings → Take the tour.
- **Cloud-sync folders are skipped by default** — OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud, Box, pCloud, MEGA — so a scan never triggers a mass download of online-only files.
- **One update check**, twenty seconds after launch, and never during a scan. Nothing downloads without asking.
- **Offline activation** with a licence file, for machines that never go online. Keys only work in Space Wizard.

## What it costs

Free on your home drive, up to 100 GB per scan — and remote hosts, with no cap at all. **Pro is €20 once, VAT included**: every drive on the machine, no scan-size cap, one computer, no subscription, future updates included. See [pricing](https://royalsoftworks.com/pricing/) or [how Space Wizard works](https://royalsoftworks.com/products/space-wizard/how-it-works/).

## Frequently asked questions

What does Space Wizard do?

It measures a drive folder by folder and shows where the space went — a sortable tree with each folder's share of its parent, and a chart of the largest consumers that follows you as you open folders. It also finds files you have saved twice, by content, and lets you delete the extra copies safely.

Can it scan a server?

Yes, over SFTP, FTPS or plain FTP, with nothing to install on the server. Save a connection with a password, a private key or your SSH agent, and the server behaves like a local drive in the app. SSH host keys are remembered on first connect, and a changed key stops the connection.

Is the free version limited?

The free version scans your home drive, up to 100 GB per scan, and remote hosts with no cap. Pro unlocks every drive on the machine and removes the cap, for €20 once, VAT included — a perpetual licence for one computer.

Why does it ask for administrator rights?

So it can read every folder on the drive. Without them, system folders and other users' profiles cannot be opened, and the total would be quietly smaller than what Windows reports. If it is started without them, it says so and offers to restart elevated.

Does it skip OneDrive and Dropbox folders?

By default, yes. Cloud-sync folders hold placeholder files, and walking them can make the provider download every one of them. You can switch the exclusion off.

Is there a Linux or macOS version?

1.0 ships for Windows 10 and 11. The Linux build comes from the same code and follows; there is no macOS build.
